The Wiscasset, Waterville, & Farmington Railway is excited to announce our 3rd Annual MUSIC ON THE RAILWAY concert series!  This year will feature four concerts Saturdays in late June through September on our grounds by Alna Center station.

Now through March 31st, you can purchase a season pass at the discounted price of four concerts for the price of three!  Tickets for individual concerts (on sale April 1st) will be $16.  Our season pass (on sale through March 31st) is $48!

Our 2020 Saturday concerts will feature:

June 20th: Rough Sawn
Back by popular demand, Rough Sawn (Facebook) is a local string band composed of farmers and carpenters–true salt of the earth people. They are renowned for their excellent covers of classic country, bluegrass, folk and Western swing as well as timeless originals. They’ve played local farmers markets, breweries, and other events. Their four-part harmonies are not something you’re going to want to miss. You can find Rough Sawn on Facebook.

July 25th: Pejepscot Station
Pejepscot Station (website, Facebook) is a high-energy bluegrass band comprised of veteran musicians hailing from the Midcoast Maine area, featuring Jim McLaughlin on mandolin, guitar and fiddle, Stephen “Satch” Hatch on guitar, Cherie “Peachblossom” Howard on bass, Russ Donahue on mandolin and guitar, and Ren Bernier on banjo. Vocals are shared by all. Based in the village of Pejepscot (in Topsham, ME), the band has been performing throughout southern Maine since forming in 2011. Their repertoire is a mix of traditional and contemporary bluegrass, Americana, and some “bluegrassified” favorites thrown in. Broad vocal harmonies and an informal and relaxed stage presence make for an enjoyable and fun show appropriate for all.

August 22nd: Fremont Street String Band
Fremont Street String Band (website, Facebook and Spotify) is a 5-piece Down East Maine bluegrass band. Formed in the storybook town of Machias, this band personifies the daring spirit and raw boldness of Maine’s rocky shores and the intriguing muses of Maine’s dense forests. They push the boundaries of musical convention, innovating and reinvigorating classic tunes, without sacrificing the heart and guts of America’s musical heritage. Their original songs are about Maine, love, life, and everything that matters. Engaging and energetic, this band breathes life into its audiences and leaves them feeling more alive and closer to their wild roots.

September 26th: OldHat Duo
OldHat (website and Facebook) is an acoustic string band based out of Eliot, Maine. Fusing tight vocal harmonies with a lively string band rhythm section, OldHat’s sound draws from bluegrass, old time, folk, and country traditions. The band is comprised of Whitney Roy (Guitar, Vocals) and Steve Roy (Mandolin, Fiddle, Vocals).  Whitney Roy’s lilting vocals provide the backbone of OldHat’s vocal blend, while her solid rhythm guitar anchors the bands rhythm section.  Steve Roy is one of New England’s premier multi-instrumentalists, and has performed and toured with many of the acoustic world’s top acts.

Our concert trains depart our Sheepscot station (97 Cross Road, Alna) at 4.30 p.m. sharp.  Please arrive early to ensure a relaxed experience.  Music at Alna Center under our pavilion is from 5:00 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Train fare and parking at Sheepscot are included in the ticket price. Feel free to bring a blanket.  Information on food and beverage options will be available in the coming weeks.

Enjoy an unforgettable and unique experience this coming weekend during Steam and Sleighs at the WW&F Railway.

Ride our Railway’s steam-powered Sheepscot Valley Winter Service trains and enjoy a horse-drawn sleigh (or wagon) ride, a visit to the farm, backcountry cross country skiing, snowshoeing, winter hiking, and more at our station stops along your journey.

Our train will take you to “Top of the Mountain” where it will be met by a horse-drawn sleigh to bring you to SeaLyon Farm, LLC where a plethora of goods will be available for perusal and purchase including lavender products!

At the farm, be sure to purchase a slice or two of Blazing Tomato Pizza for lunch!

Creamed Baking Co. will also be at the farm selling their decadent caramels, baked goods, and S’More’s kits to roast over the bonfire!

Tickets include train fare, sleigh rides, hot beverages & access to skiing, hiking, and snowshoeing trails. (Purchases at SeaLyon Farm, LLC are by individual settlement.)

Train tickets are $10.00 adults; $9.00 60+, museum members, and military (active and veteran); $5.00 children 4-12; Free children birth-3.  Tickets are available by advance sale at https://wwfrytickets.simpletix.com/e/48757.

Trains leave from Sheepscot Station (97 Cross Rd. Alna) to Top of the Mountain Station and return.

At Top of Mountain detrain for horse-drawn sleigh rides (to/from SeaLyon Farm, LLC), self-guided snowshoeing, backcountry X/C, hiking and to explore the work the railway is undertaking on the mountain extension, a .75 mile extension of the railway to a new station adjacent to Midcoast Conservancy‘s beautiful Trout Brook Preserve. For your convenience, a heated railcar and attendant will be on hand to help direct you. There are no facilities at this remote location, (outside of those offered at SeaLyon Farm.) Allocate 90 minutes of layover time to ride the sleigh, visit the farm, and enjoy the outdoor activities.

Trains for Steam and Sleighs at the Top of the Mountain leave Sheepscot Station (97 Cross Road, Alna) at 10:30 AM, 12 noon, and 1:30 PM. (An additional 3:00 PM train will pick up guests; visitors are welcome for a train ride only at 3:00 PM.)

Trains depart Top of the Mountain for the return back to Sheepscot Station at 11:00, 12:30, 2:00, and 3:30.

Tickets are valid for round trip passage to and from Sheepscot Station and include access to all of the day’s activities. Should you desire a longer layover at Top of the Mountain, you may return on any subsequent train. Please order tickets in advance via the link provided.

Steam and Sleighs will be held Snow or Shine. In the event of poor driving or unsuitable conditions for the horses, the event will be canceled (announced via Facebook and email) with tickets refunded. Steam train rides will still occur on schedule. Come dressed prepared for the weather. If you care to engage in outdoor activities, please bring your own skis, snowshoes, or outdoor gear.

Our Museum tables were quite busy during the 2019 show!

Come visit our Museum tables at the upcoming Railroad Hobby Show January 25th and 26th.  The show, sponsored by the Amherst Railway Society, is held at the Eastern States Exposition Fairgrounds in West Springfield, Massachusetts. Please see railroadhobbyshow.com for more information about the show.

This event is one of the largest railroad hobby shows in the United States.  Proceeds from the show are used by the Amherst Railway Society to promote interest in railroads, including donations to rail museums, historical societies, restoration projects and scholarship funds.  Over the years, the ARS has generously donated to restoration efforts by our Museum.

Our sales table will be in the Young Building, section 78, near the “Heroes and Legends” cafe—in the area popularly known as “narrow gauge corner.”  Many items available in our gift shop will be available at the show!

A highlight of this year’s show will be Maine Narrow Gauge’s Monson No. 3 operating outside on 100 feet of track.  Monson No. 3 spent this past season on the WW&F in Sheepscot and operated during several of our special events in 2019.  The appearance of No. 3 at the show is the result of the combined efforts of MNG, Maine Locomotive & Machine, and the WW&F.
